In condemnation of the people of Iraq
Parmi ses paroles (que la paix soit sur lui) concernant la critique des habitants de l'Irak [dans lesquelles il les réprimande pour avoir abandonné le combat, la victoire étant presque acquise, puis l'avoir niée].
Now then. O people [1] of Iraq! You are like the pregnant woman who, on completion of the period of pregnancy delivers a dead child and her husband is also dead and her period of widowhood is long while only remote relation inherits her. By Allāh, I did not come to you of my own accord. I came to you by force of circumstances. I have come to know that you say ‘Alī speaks lie? May Allāh fight you! Against whom do I speak lie? Whether against Allāh? But I am the first to have believed in him. Whether against His Prophet? But I am the fast who testified to him. Certainly not. By Allāh it was a way of expression which failed to appreciate, and you were not capable of it. Woe to you. I am giving out these measures of nice expression free of any cost. I wish there were vessels good enough to hold them. “Certainly, you will understand it after some time.” (Qur’ān, 38:88)

Ô habitants de l'Irak, vous êtes comme une femme enceinte qui a porté longtemps, puis a accouché d'un enfant mort-né, dont la gestation a été prolongée et dont l'héritier est le plus éloigné. Par Allah, je ne suis pas venu vers vous par choix, mais je suis venu vers vous comme un marché. Il m'est parvenu que vous dites : "[Ali] ment, qu'Allah vous combatte !" Alors sur qui ment-il ? Contre Allah ? Je suis le premier à avoir cru en lui ! Ou contre son Prophète ? Je suis le premier à l'avoir confirmé ! Non, par Allah, mais c'est une langue que vous avez négligée et à laquelle vous n'appartenez pas. Malheur à sa mère ! Comme il est vendu sans prix ! S'il avait un récipient, vous connaîtriez son récit après un certain temps.
