In disparagement of those who shrink from fighting
Isnād[خطبها عند علمه بغزوة النعمان بن بشير صاحب معاوية لعين التمر]
Et lors d'un de ses discours, (que la paix soit sur lui), [discours prononcé lorsqu'il eut connaissance de l'expédition de Nu'man ibn Bashir, compagnon de Mu'awiya, vers 'Ayn at-Tamar], [dans lequel il expose ses excuses et incite les gens à le soutenir].
I am faced with men who do not obey when I order and do not respond when I call them. May you have no father! (Woe to you!) What are you waiting for to rise for the cause of Allah? Does not faith join you together, or sense of shame rouse you? I stand among you shouting and I am calling you for help, but you do not listen to my word, and do not obey my orders, till circumstance show out their bad consequences. No blood can be avenged through you and no purpose can be achieved with you. I called you for help of your brethren but made noises like the camel having pain in stomach, and became loose like the camel of thin back. Then a wavering weak contingent came to me from amongst you: “as if they are being led to death and they are only watching.” [1] (Qur’ān, 8:6)

J'ai été déçu par ceux qui ne m'obéissent pas quand je commande et ne répondent pas quand j'appelle. Je ne suis pas satisfait de vous ! Pourquoi tardez-vous à obtenir la victoire de votre Seigneur ? N'avez-vous pas une religion qui vous unit et un honneur qui vous protège ? Je me tiens parmi vous en appelant à l'aide, je vous implore, mais vous n'écoutez pas mes paroles, vous ne suivez pas mes ordres, jusqu'à ce que les événements révèlent les conséquences de la procrastination. Aucune rétribution ne vous atteindra, aucun objectif ne sera atteint par vous. Je vous ai appelés à secourir vos frères, mais vous avez reculé comme des chameaux fuyant, vous vous êtes alourdis comme des bêtes de somme fuyant. Puis, parmi vous, est apparu un groupe faible et effrayé, comme s'ils étaient conduits à la mort tout en regardant.
as-Sayyid ar-Raḍī says: Amīr al-mu’minīn’s word “mutadhā‘ib” means “muḍṭarib” (i.e. moved or troubled), as they say “tadhā‘abat ar-rīḥ” (i.e. the winds blow in troubled manner). Similarly the wolf is called “dhi‘b” because of its trouble movement.

Je dis: Son (que la paix soit sur lui) dire: "moutadā'ib" signifie: perturbé, venant de leur expression: le vent s'est agité, signifiant son souffle perturbé, et de là le loup est ainsi nommé, pour l'agitation de sa marche.
