De son livre (que la paix soit sur lui) à l'un de ses agents.

Now, I have come to know such a thing about you that if you have done so then you have displeased your Lord, disobeyed your Imām and betrayed your trust.

Après cela, il m'a été rapporté à propos de toi une affaire : si tu l'as faite, tu as irrité ton Seigneur, désobéi à ton Imam et déshonoré ta responsabilité.

I have come to know that you have razed the ground and taken away whatever was under your feet and devoured what ever was in your hands. Send me your account and know that the accounting to Allāh will be severer than that to the people; and that is an end to the matter.

Il m'a été rapporté que tu as dépouillé la terre en prenant ce qui se trouvait sous tes pieds, et en consommant ce qui était sous tes mains. Présente-moi donc ton compte, et sache que le compte d'Allah est bien plus grand que le compte des gens. Que la paix soit sur toi.

Now, I had made you a partner in my trust, and made you my chief man. And for me no other person from my kinsmen was more trustworthy than you in the matter of sympathizing with me, assisting and respecting my trusts. But when you saw that time had attacked your cousin, the enemy had waged war, the trust of the people was being humiliated, and the whole community was trackless and disunited, you turned your back against your cousin and forsook him when others forsook him, you abandoned him when others abandoned him, and you betrayed him when others betrayed him. Thus, you showed no sympathy to your cousin, nor discharged the trust.

Quant à moi, je t'avais associé à ma confiance, je t'avais fait mon étendard et mon intime, et personne parmi les gens de ma famille n'était plus digne de ma confiance envers moi que toi, en termes de compagnie, de soutien et de restitution de la confiance envers moi. Mais quand tu as vu que le temps était venu où ton cousin avait été calomnié, que l'ennemi s'était dressé et que la confiance des gens avait été trahie, et que cette communauté avait été éprouvée et divisée, tu as tourné le dos à ton cousin quand il était dans le besoin, tu l'as abandonné avec les abandonneurs, tu l'as trahi avec les traîtres. Tu n'as pas agi envers ton cousin comme tu aurais dû, et tu n'as pas restitué la confiance.

It seems as if you do not want (to please) Allāh by your jihād, and as if you do not stand upon a clear sign from your Lord, and as if you have been playing tricks with this ummah (Muslim community) to earn (the pleasure of) this world and watching for the moment of their neglectfulness to usurp their share of the wealth. As soon as it was possible for you to misappropriate the ummah’s trust, you hastened to turn around and attack (them), and made a swift leap to snatch away whatever you could from their property meant for their widows and their orphans as a wolf snatches a wounded and helpless goat. Then, you happily loaded it off to the Ḥijāz without feeling guilty for having appropriated it. Allāh’s woe be to your ill-wishers; it was as though you were sending to your family what you had inherited from your father and mother.

Comme si Allah n'avait pas voulu par ton jihad, comme si tu n'avais pas été clair de la part de ton Seigneur, comme si tu ne faisais que comploter contre cette communauté pour les détourner de leur monde et détourner leur attention de leur propre intérêt ! Quand la trahison de la communauté a été facilitée pour toi, tu as agi rapidement, tu as saisi l'opportunité, tu as pris autant que tu pouvais de leurs biens protégés pour leurs veuves et leurs orphelins, tel un loup ancien saisissant la brebis fragile et sanglante, tu l'as emmenée au Hidjaz, portant sur ton dos le fardeau, sans culpabilité pour ta prise, comme si - que Dieu te préserve - tu étais revenu vers ta famille, héritage de ton père et de ta mère.

Glory be to Allāh! Do you not believe in the Day of judgement, or do you not fear the exaction of account?

Gloire à Allah ! Ne crois-tu pas en la résurrection ? Ne crains-tu pas le jour du jugement ?

O’ you who were counted by us among the men possessed of mind, how can you enjoy food and drink when you know that you are eating the unlawful and drinking the unlawful. You are purchasing slavemaids and wedding women with the money of the orphans, the poor, the believers and the participants in jihād to whom Allāh had dedicated this money and through whom He had strengthened these cities.

Ô toi qui es compté parmi les personnes intelligentes, comment peux-tu rendre licite la boisson et la nourriture, alors que tu sais que tu consommes ce qui est illicite, que tu bois ce qui est interdit, que tu achètes des esclaves et que tu épouses des femmes avec les biens des orphelins, des pauvres, des croyants et des combattants dans le sentier d'Allah, sur lesquels Allah a fait descendre ces biens et a préservé ces terres grâce à eux.

Fear Allāh and return to these people their properties. If you do not do so and Allāh grants me power over you I shall excuse myself before Allāh about you and strike you with my sword with which I did not strike anyone but that he went to Hell.

Craignez Allah et restituez les biens de ces gens, sinon si Allah me permet de vous punir, je me plaindrai à Allah de vous et je vous frapperai avec mon épée avec laquelle je n'ai jamais frappé personne sans qu'il n'entre en Enfer !

By Allāh, even if Ḥasan and Ḥusayn had done what you did there would have been no leniency with me for them and they could not have won their way with me till I had recovered from them the right and destroyed the wrong produced by their unjust action.

Par Allah, si al-Hasan et al-Husayn avaient commis un acte similaire à celui que tu as commis, ils n'auraient ni protection ni soutien de ma part, jusqu'à ce que je fasse valoir mes droits sur eux et éloigne l'injustice de leur injustice.

I swear by Allāh, the Lord of all beings, that I would not be pleased to regard their money which you have appropriated as lawful for me and to leave it to my successors by way of inheritance.

Je jure par Allah, Seigneur de l'univers, que ce que tu as pris de leurs biens est licite pour moi, je le laisse en héritage à ceux qui viendront après moi.

Mind yourself and consider for a while as though you had reached the end of life and had been buried under the earth. Then your actions will be presented before you in the place where the oppressor cries “Alas” while he who wasted his life yearns for return (to the world), but time was none to escape. (Qur’ān, 38:3)

Dénoncez Rouwaydah, comme si vous aviez atteint la limite, que vous étiez enterré sous la terre, que vos actions vous étaient présentées dans le lieu où les injustes seront appelés à regretter, où les perdus souhaiteront revenir, et il n'y aura alors aucun moyen de fuite.

Now, you are surely one of those whose help I take in establishing religion and with whose help I break the haughtiness of the sinful and guard critical boundaries. You should seek Allāh’s help in whatever causes you anxiety. Add a little harshness to the mixture of leniency and remain lenient where leniency is more appropriate. Adopt harshness when you cannot do without harshness. Bend your wings (in humbleness) before the subjects. Meet them with your face broad and keep yourself lenient (in behaviour) with them. Treat them equally in looking at them with half eyes or full eyes, in signalling and in greeting so that the great should not expect transgression on your part and the weak should not lose hope in your justice; and that is an end to the matter.

Après cela, tu es parmi ceux que j'invoque pour l'établissement de la religion, et avec qui je réprime les pécheurs, et devant qui je ferme les bouches des menaçants. Alors, implore l'aide d'Allah pour ce qui te préoccupe, mêle la rigueur avec un peu de douceur, sois aussi compatissant que la compassion le requiert, et sois résolu dans la rigueur lorsque la rigueur seule peut te protéger. Abaisse ton aile pour les sujets, montre-leur ton visage, sois doux avec eux, sois présent pour eux en un clin d'œil, en un regard, par un signe ou un salut, afin que les grands ne convoitent pas ta honte et que les faibles ne désespèrent pas de ta justice.
