as-Sayyid ar-Raḍī says: Some people say this saying is of the Prophet (s.a.w.), but what confirms that it is the saying of Amīr al-mu’minīn (a.s.), is the statement related by Tha‘lab from Ibn al-A‘rābī namely that (Caliph) al-Ma’mūn said: “If ‘Alī had not said ‘ukhbur taqlihi’ (Try a man and you will hate him), I would have said, ‘aqlihi takhbur’ (Hate a man in order to try him).”
