42. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Amir from abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Mas‘udiy from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtariy ibn ‘Umar al-Bajaliy who has said the following: “I once complained before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, against my worsening condition and mounting difficulties. He (the Imam) said, ‘When you arrive in al-Kufah, sell a piece of pillow from your home for ten dirham, invite your brothers, prepare food for them and ask them to pray for you to Allah.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I followed the instruction but it was not possible without selling the piece of pillow to prepare food as he (the Imam) had instructed me. So I sold the pillow and asked them to pray for me before Allah.’ He has said, ‘By Allah I waited only very little that one of my debtors came at the door and knocked at it. He made a settlement with me about a large amount of assets that I counted at ten thousand dirham.’ He has said that thereafter things began to come to him.’”

Lorsque tu arriveras à Koufa, vends un tapis de ta maison pour dix dirhams, invite tes frères et prépare-leur de la nourriture, et demande-leur de faire des invocations pour toi.

43. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Abd Allah from ibn Mahbub from Sanaa ‘ah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘One who consumes the assets of a believing person in unlawful ways is not of my follower and friends.’”

Il n'y a pas de protection pour moi envers celui qui consomme illégalement les biens d'un croyant.

44. Muhammad ibn Ja’far has narrated from al-‘Abbas al-Kufiy from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd and Ali ibn Ibrahim all from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qasaniy who has said the following: “I once wrote to him (the Imam) (abu al-Hassan, al-Thalith) from al-Madinah in the year two hundred thirty-one, saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, a man commands another man to buy goods for him or other things which he buys but the goods are stolen or are looted on the way, from whose asset is this loss, is it from the assets of the commander or the one commanded? He (the Imam) ‘Alayhi al-Salam, wrote the answer that said, ‘It is from the asset of the commander.’”

J'ai écrit à lui, c'est-à-dire à Aba al-Hasan le Troisième (sur lui la paix), alors que j'étais à Médine l'année cent trente-deux, disant: "Je te sacrifie, un homme a ordonné à un autre d'acheter pour lui une marchandise ou autre chose, il l'a achetée, puis elle a été volée de lui ou le chemin lui a été coupé du bien de celui qui a ordonné ou du bien de celui qui a été ordonné, alors il a écrit S de la propriété de celui qui a ordonné."

45. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ya’qub ibn Yazid from the son of the sister of al-Walid ibn Sabih from his maternal uncle, al-Walid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Of the people there are those who earn their living from the sword, others from trade and still others earn by their tongue.’”

a dit : "Certains parmi les gens ont vu leur subsistance placée dans l'épée, d'autres dans le commerce, et d'autres encore dans leur langue."

46. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak from Ibrahim ibn Salih from a man from al-Ja’fariy who has said the following: “In al-Madinah there was a man with us, called abu al-Qamqa’m who was unfortunate. He went to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and complained before him against his condition and informed him (the Imam) that wherever he goes for something he fails. Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘In your last prayer in the morning, say, ‘Free of all defect is Allah, most Great. I ask forgiveness from Allah and plead before Him for help through His generosity’, ten times.’ Abu Qamqa’m has said, ‘I kept doing it and after very little time a people from village came to me and told me that a man from my people has died and there no heir is found for him except me. I went with them and received his legacy which made me rich.’”

Il y avait à Médine un homme parmi nous surnommé Abu al-Qamqam, qui était bègue. Il vint voir Abu al-Hasan (sur lui soit la paix) se plaignant de son bégaiement et lui disant qu'il ne pouvait exprimer ses besoins pour qu'ils soient satisfaits. Abu al-Hasan (sur lui soit la paix) lui dit : Dis à la fin de ta dernière invocation de la prière de l'aube : "Gloire à Allah, le Très Grand. Je demande pardon à Allah et je Lui demande de Sa grâce dix fois." Abu al-Qamqam dit : J'ai suivi cela et, par Allah, je n'ai pas tardé longtemps avant qu'un groupe de Bédouins vienne me voir et m'informe qu'un homme de ma tribu était mort sans laisser d'héritier, sauf moi. Je suis donc parti et j'ai hérité de lui, alors que j'étais dans le besoin.

47. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Mahbub from Sa‘dan from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must not deny loaning yeast for bread-making and taking fire to start a fire; because it attracts sustenance to the family along with high moral manners.’”

48. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from those who narrated to him from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam from al-Harith ibn Hadirah al-Azdiy who has said the following: “A man during the time of ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, had found a treasure and my father bought it from him for three hundred dirham and one hundred sheep followed by their young; and my mother blamed him for it, saying, ‘You have bought it for three hundred sheep; one hundred of their young, one hundred sheep and one hundred in their womb.’ My father regretted and went to ask for a reduced price. He refused and said, ‘Take from me ten sheep, take from me twenty sheep’ and made him tired. My father then took the treasure and made a price for one thousand sheep from it. The other man came back and said, ‘Take your sheep back and give me whatever you like.’ But he refused. He tried until he was exhausted and said, ‘I can harm you.’ He complained before ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, against my father. When my father told his side of the story before ’Amir al- Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, he (the Imam) said to the owner of treasure, ‘Pay one-fifth of what you have received because it is on you as the finder of the treasure and there is nothing on him because he has taken the price of his sheep.’”

Un homme trouva un trésor à l'époque de l'Imam Ali (que la paix soit sur lui) et mon père l'acheta de lui pour trois cents dinars et cent brebis suitées. Ma mère le maudit en disant : "Tu as pris ceci pour trois cents brebis, dont les petits sont cent et les âmes sont cent et celles qui sont dans leur ventre sont cent." Mon père regretta et partit pour le lui rendre, mais l'homme refusa. Il lui dit alors : "Prends de moi dix chèvres, prends de moi vingt brebis." Mon père prit le trésor et en tira la valeur de mille brebis. L'autre vint vers lui et lui dit : "Prends ton troupeau et apporte-moi ce que tu veux." Il refusa. Il le soigna et lui dit : "Je vais te causer du tort." Il se prépara à aller voir l'Imam Ali (que la paix soit sur lui) contre mon père. Quand mon père raconta son affaire à l'Imam Ali (que la prière d'Allah et Ses bénédictions soient sur lui), il dit à l'homme qui avait trouvé le trésor : "Rends le cinquième de ce que tu as pris, car le cinquième t'incombe, car c'est toi qui as trouvé le trésor, et rien n'incombe à l'autre, car il n'a pris que le prix de ses brebis."

49. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about the case of a man to whom another man owed a certain amount of assets because of ‘Aynah deal. When payment time was due he did not have anything to pay so he wanted to turn it over on him for profit; if he can sell a pearl or something else worth a hundred dirham for a thousand so he can defer payment. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful because my father, may Allah be pleased with him, had done so and he commanded me to do so because of something that he owed.’”

Un homme possédait de l'argent qu'il avait confié à un autre en guise de prêt. Lorsque le remboursement arriva, l'emprunteur ne disposait pas de la somme due. Il envisagea alors de lui vendre des perles ou autre chose de valeur équivalente à cent dinars pour mille dinars, en différant le paiement. Il lui fut dit : "Il n'y a aucun mal à cela. Mon père a fait cela, et il m'a ordonné de le faire dans une affaire similaire à la sienne."

50. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Sulayman from Ahmad ibn al-Fadl (from) abu ‘Amr al- Hadhdha’ who has said the following: “I faced a difficult condition and wrote to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about it and he (the Imam) wrote to me, ‘Continue reading, “We sent Noah to his people ... to the end.’” (Chapter 71) I read it for one year but did not see any change. I wrote to him again to inform him (the Imam) of my difficult condition and that I have been reading the Chapter for one year as the Imam had instructed and that I did not experience any change. He (the Imam) then wrote to me saying, ‘One year is passed, now read Chapter 97.’ I then read it for a very short time that ibn abu Dawud sent me something and paid off my debts and sent me and my family to al-Basrah as an agent to Bab Kala’ (name of a place) with a salary of five hundred dirham; and from al-Basra I wrote through Ali ibn Mahziyar to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, explaining, ‘I had written to your father about so and so issues and had complained against so and so matters, I have found what I liked. I like to ask you about what I should do about reading Chapter 97, if I must continue reading it in my obligatory Salat (prayer) and others or there is a limit of time for it.’ He (the Imam) signed the answer and I read the signature that said, ‘You must not leave from Quran, short or long passages. Of Chapter 97 it is enough to read one hundred times in one day and night.’”

"Ma situation s'est détériorée, alors j'ai écrit à Abi Ja'far (que la paix soit sur lui) qui m'a répondu en me demandant de réciter 'Certes, Nous avons envoyé Noé vers son peuple'. J'ai récité cela pendant un certain temps sans voir de changement. J'ai alors écrit pour lui lui faire part de ma situation et de mon récit de 'Certes, Nous avons envoyé Noé vers son peuple' comme il me l'avait ordonné, sans voir de changement. Il m'a alors écrit que le délai était arrivé à terme pour moi et m'a demandé de réciter 'Certes, Nous l'avons fait descendre'. J'ai obéi et peu de temps après, Ibn Abi Dawud m'a payé mes dettes, m'a donné de l'argent pour moi et ma famille, et m'a envoyé à Basra pour ses affaires. J'ai reçu cinq cents dirhams de lui et j'ai écrit à Ali ibn Mahziyar à Basra pour Abi al-Hasan (que la paix soit sur lui) en lui disant que j'avais demandé à ton père ceci et cela et que j'avais obtenu ce que j'espérais. J'aimerais que tu me dises, ô mon maître, comment je dois réciter 'Certes, Nous l'avons fait descendre'. Dois-je me limiter à elle seule dans mes obligations et autres, ou puis-je réciter autre chose avec elle, ou y a-t-il une limite que je dois respecter ? Il a répondu en écrivant : 'Ne laisse pas du Coran, ni ses parties courtes ni longues, et tu seras récompensé pour chaque récitation de 'Certes, Nous l'avons fait descendre' cent fois par jour et nuit'."

51. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from ‘Isma’il ibn Sahl who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and said, ‘Debts are holding me down and they are heavy.’ He (the Imam) wrote to me, ‘Ask forgiveness from Allah a great deal and moisten you tongue by reading, “Inna Anzalna” Chapter 97.’”

J'ai écrit à Abu Ja'far (que la paix soit sur lui) : "Une dette écrasante m'a accablé, alors multiplie les demandes de pardon et humidifie ta langue en récitant 'Nous l'avons fait descendre'."

52. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from al-Fadl ibn Kathir al- Mada’iniy from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once a certain person of the followers of abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, came to visit him (the Imam) and he saw his shirt had a patch on it, so he kept looking at it. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, asked, ‘Why are you looking?’ He replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, there is a patch on your shirt.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Pick up this book and read what is there’ - there was a book in front of him (the Imam) or nearby. The man looked in the book and it was written there, ‘One who does not feel shy has no faith, one who does not plan has no wealth and one who does not have anything old cannot have anything new.’”

Il entra chez lui avec certains de ses compagnons et vit sur lui une chemise avec une tache. Il commença à le regarder et Abu Abdullah (que la paix soit sur lui) lui dit : "Pourquoi regardes-tu ?" Il lui répondit : "Que ma vie te soit sacrifiée, une tache est tombée sur ta chemise." Il lui dit : "Frappe ta main sur ce Livre et lis ce qu'il contient." Il avait un livre devant lui ou à proximité, l'homme le regarda et vit : "Celui qui n'a pas de pudeur n'a pas de foi, celui qui n'a pas de respect n'a pas de richesse, et celui qui n'a pas de nouveauté n'a pas de création."

53. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from al-‘Abbas ibn Ma’ruf from a man from Mandal ibn Ali al-‘Anziy from Muhammad ibn Mutarrif from Misma’ from al-Asbagh ibn Nubatah who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘When Allah becomes angry with a people on whom He has not sent any suffering, He makes their prices to become costly, shortens their life span, takes away profit from their trade, their fruits do not become clean, their canals do not over-flow and He withholds their rain and makes their wicked ones to dominate them.’”

L'Imam Ali (que la paix soit sur lui) a dit que le Messager d'Allah (que la prière d'Allah et Son salut soient sur lui) a dit: "Quand Allah se met en colère contre une communauté et ne leur envoie pas de châtiment, les prix de leurs biens augmentent, leurs vies sont raccourcies, leurs commerçants ne réalisent pas de profits, leurs fruits ne sont pas bénis, leurs rivières s'assèchent, la pluie leur est retenue et les pires d'entre eux dominent."

54. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid from Mus‘ab ibn ‘Abd Allah al- Nawfaliy from the one who has narrated in a marfu’ manner who has said the following: “Once an Arab came on his camel in the time of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, sell my (herd of) camels for me.’ The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, ‘I am not a camel seller in the market.’ He then said, ‘Give me an idea.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Sell this he-camel for so and so much and this she-camel for so and so much until he (the Messenger of Allah) explained for him about every camel there. The Arab man went to the market and sold them. He then came back to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and said, ‘I swear by the One who has sent you with truth, not one dirham was less or more than what you had said it was, so accept my gift, O Messenger of Allah.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘No, I do not accept.’ He said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, accept it.’ They continued speaking until he (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘You must give us a she-camel as a gift and you must not separate it from its young.’”

Un bédouin est venu avec des chameaux qu'il avait sous le pacte du Messager d'Allah (que la paix et les bénédictions d'Allah soient sur lui et sa famille). Il dit : "Ô Messager d'Allah, vends-moi ces chameaux." Le Messager d'Allah (que la paix et les bénédictions d'Allah soient sur lui et sa famille) lui répondit : "Je ne suis pas un marchand dans les marchés." Il lui indiqua alors de vendre tel chameau pour telle somme, et tel âne pour telle somme, jusqu'à ce qu'il lui ait décrit chaque bête. Le bédouin partit au marché et les vendit, puis revint vers le Messager d'Allah (que la paix et les bénédictions d'Allah soient sur lui et sa famille) en disant : "Par Celui qui t'a envoyé avec la vérité, aucun dirham n'a été ajouté ni retranché de ce que tu m'as dit. Guide-moi, ô Messager d'Allah." Le Prophète répondit : "Non." Le bédouin insista en disant : "Oui, ô Messager d'Allah." Il continua à lui parler jusqu'à ce que le Prophète lui dit : "Offre-nous un chameau sans en faire un chameau de bât."

55. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ya’qub Yazid from Zakariya’ al-Khazzaz from Yahya al-Hadhdha’ who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I may buy certain things in the presence of my father and I see certain things in him that make me depressed.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Avoid buying in his presence. When you have a right on a man say to him, “Write down, ‘So and so has written in his handwriting, assigning Allah as witness upon himself and Allah is sufficient witness.’” He will certainly pay in his life time or after his death.’”

Il se peut que j'achète quelque chose en présence de mon père et que j'en voie des défauts cachés." Il a répondu : "Fais-le examiner et n'achète pas en sa présence. Si tu as un droit sur quelqu'un, dis-lui d'écrire et untel fils d'untel l'a écrit de sa main, et qu'Allah soit témoin sur lui-même, et Allah suffit comme témoin, car cela sera décidé de son vivant ou après sa mort."

56. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Ali ibn Bilal from al-Hassan ibn Bassam al-Jammal who has said the following: “I once was with Ishaq ibn ‘ Ammar al-Sayrafiy when a man came and he wanted something for a dinar but he had closed the shop and had sealed the sack. He then gave him the item for a dinar. I then said, ‘Fie on you, O Ishaq! I could have picked up for you a hundred thousand dirham from the ship.’ He said to me, ‘I had the same attitude but I heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, “Whoever belittles a small amount of sustenance is deprived of its greater amount.” Then he (the Imam) turned to me and said, “O Ishaq, do not belittle small amounts of sustenance; otherwise, you will be deprived of its greater amount.’””

Celui qui se contente d'une petite subsistance se voit privé de beaucoup.

57. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn abu ‘Umayr from al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Minqariy from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Earning certain kinds of sustenance dries up one’s skin on his bones (very hard to earn).”’

Certes, parmi les provisions, il y a ce qui assèche la peau sur les os.

58. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-‘Asemiy has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Tamimiy from Ali ibn Asbat from a man who has said the following: “I once mentioned Egypt to abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam. He (the Imam) said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You can seek to earn sustenance from it but you must not seek to stay there.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘Egypt is harsh; young ones break down there.’”

J'ai mentionné Misr devant lui, et il a dit : "Le Messager d'Allah (que la prière d'Allah et Son salut soient sur lui) a dit : 'Recherchez-y votre subsistance et non pas pour y rester.' Puis Abū ‘Abdillāh (que la paix soit sur lui) a ajouté : 'Misr est le lieu où les personnes à courte vie sont enterrées.'

59. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-‘Asemiy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nahdiy from Muhammad ibn Ali from Sharif ibn Sabiq from al-Fadl ibn abu Qurrah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once al-Mawaliy (non-Arab Muslims) came to ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and said, ‘We complain before you against these Arabs. The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would give us gifts along with them equally. He (the Messenger of Allah) arranged marriage for Salman, Bilal and Suhayb but these have denied it for us saying, “We do not do so.’” ‘Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, went to them and spoke to them and Arabs shouted, ‘We have denied them, O abu al-Hassan, we have denied them O abu al-Hassan.’ He (the Imam) came out angry with his gown dragging behind him, saying, ‘O Mawaliy people, they have equaled you with Jews and Christians. They marry from you but do not allow you to marry from them and do not give you what they take. You must do business, may Allah grant you blessings. I heard the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, saying, “Sustenance has ten parts, of which nine are in trade and one part is in other things.’””

Les esclaves sont venus voir l'Imam des croyants (sur lui la paix) et lui ont dit : "Nous nous plaignons à toi de ces Arabes, car le Messager d'Allah (que la prière d'Allah et Son salut soient sur lui) nous donnait des cadeaux équivalents à ceux qu'il leur donnait. Il a marié Salman, Bilal et Suhaib, et a préféré ceux-ci à nous." Ils ont ajouté : "Nous ne le faisons pas." L'Imam des croyants (sur lui la paix) est allé les voir et leur a parlé à ce sujet. Les esclaves se sont alors écriés : "Tu as raison, ô Aba al-Hasan, tu as raison." Il est sorti, en colère, en traînant son vêtement en disant : "Ô groupe des esclaves, vous vous êtes mis au niveau des Juifs et des Chrétiens, ils se marient avec vous mais ne vous marient pas, et ne vous donnent pas ce qu'ils reçoivent. Faites donc du commerce, qu'Allah vous bénisse, car j'ai entendu le Messager d'Allah (que la prière d'Allah et Son salut soient sur lui) dire : La subsistance est composée de dix parts, neuf dans le commerce et une dans autre chose." Cela conclut le livre de la subsistance du livre Al-Kafi, suivi du livre du mariage. Louange à Allah, le Créateur de l'aube.
