1. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “There are four things viz. betrayal of trust, theft, drinking wine and fornication which cannot enter a house except that the house is unpleasant and deprived.”

Salim from Abi Ja’far (a.s.) who said: “Because his condition becomes such that he cannot recognize his Lord.”

4. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim from Harun b. Muslim from Mas’ada b. Ziyad from Abi Abdillah from his forefathers (a.s.) that The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) who said: “When a drunkard comes on the Day of Judgment, he would be blind and his face, black. His back will be bent and spit will be overflowing from his mouth. His forehead will be tied to his toes. His hands will be coming out of his loins. The people assembled there will be horrified upon seeing the way he is taken for the accounting of his deeds.”

Yazid from Marwak b. ’Ubayd from a man from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) that he said: “One who applies antimony containing alcohol in his eyes once, the Almighty Allah will rub a rod of fire in his eyes. People who drink wine in this world will die thirsty, will be assembled on the Day of Judgment thirsty and will be thrown into Hell thirsty.”

6. It is narrated that Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) said, “One who is intoxicated after drinking wine, the Almighty Allah will not accept his Salaat for next forty days. If he misses a Salaat during these days, the Almighty Allah will give him double punishment for each Salaat missed out.”

Ali from Abdillah b. al-Mughira from al-Abbas b. ’Amir from Abi al-Sahari from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: Once Imam Ja’far Sadiq was asked about the ruling regarding a drunkard. Imam (a.s.) replied, “His prayers will not be accepted till a time even a single drop of wine is present in his veins.”

Shimr from Jabir from Abi Ja’far (a.s.) who said: Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) cursed ten persons in connection with wine viz. one who cultivates the fruit, one who nurtures it, one who prepares wine, one who drinks it, one who serves it, one who sends it, one who orders it, one who sells it, one who buys it and one who makes profit from it.

12. And from the previous chain from Muhammad b. Ahmad from Muhammad b. Ja’far al-Qummi who raised it to Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “Music is the abode of hypocrisy and wine is the key to sin. A drunkard is one who has rejected the book of Allah because if he had accepted the book of Allah, he would surely have avoided this prohibited act.”

13. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “One who puts intoxicant in one of his veins, the Almighty Allah will involve that single vein in three hundred and sixty kinds of punishments.”

Sa’eed al-Madaini from Musdaq b. Sadaqah from Ammar b. Musa from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said who said: Imam Ja’far Sadiq was asked about the ruling against the person who uses an intoxicant. Imam (a.s.) replied, “His prayers will not be accepted for next forty days and he cannot repent during these forty days. If he dies during these days, he will go to Hell.”

15. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah who said it was narrated to me by Ibrahim b. Hashim from ’Amru b. Uthman from Ahmad b. Ismail al-Katib who said: It is narrated that one of the groups of Quraish saw Imam Muhammad bin Ali (a.s.) in Masjidul Haraam and began to say: ‘The people of Iraq worship him.’ One of them advised that they send a person to him to ask a few questions. A person came to Imam and asked, “O uncle! What is the greatest sin?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Drinking wine.” He went to his people and told him about the Imam’s reply. They told him to go and ask the same question again. The person came to the Imam and repeated the question. Imam (a.s.) answered, “O nephew! Didn’t I reply you last time? Drinking wine forces a person to commit adultery, theft, murder and polytheism. The effects of wine are more than any other sin just like its tree is taller than other trees.”

Il lui a dit: "Ne t'ai-je pas dit, ô fils de mon frère, que la consommation de vin mène son buveur à la fornication, au vol, au meurtre d'une âme qu'Allah a interdit, sauf par droit, et à l'associationnisme? Par Allah, les effets du vin surpassent tout péché, tout comme son arbre surpasse tout autre arbre."

Imam (a.s.) replied, “Khunsa is prohibited and one who drinks it, is like one who drinks wine.”
